Many professional football clubs in Malaysia are struggling to perform their basic duty as employers: paying players’ salaries on time. This issue concerns not only the players but also the future of the sport in Malaysia. What direction is the most beloved sport in the country headed towards? The irresponsibility of many clubs discourages the youth from pursuing professional careers. It is genuinely disheartening for both players and football fans in Malaysia to witness these issues that continue to persist for years if not decades.
It is no secret that there are teams in the league that have not paid their players for months. This matter should not be taken lightly. The clubs’ indifferent attitude towards timely salary payments, EPF contributions, and taxes is alarming. No one should close an eye in any industry when employers neglect their financial obligations to employees, which for the longest time have been reoccurring for months on end. These are basic obligations which football clubs must follow through with. Some teams have gone without paying their players for extended periods, causing financial and mental stress for the players. This neglect not only affects players’ welfare but also the quality of the game, as mental well-being is crucial for peak performance.
The Professional Footballers Association of Malaysia (PFAM) is committed to addressing these issues. However, the fight for justice begins with us, the players. Players are encouraged to come forth and use the proper channels to fight for their rights. Contracts must be honoured, and clubs must be held accountable for their actions. PFAM is here to support and guide players in this fight, but only through collective effort can justice be achieved for the sport we love.
